Disability Awareness Walk and Roll 5K & Family Fun Run

What do you plan to do? What is the purpose of this project? Why do you think this is important?:

The Disability Awareness Walk and Roll 5K & Family Fun Run is a 4 hour event and will provide all participants with inclusive activities designed to promote disability awareness for families, schools and communities.

Funds raised will be used to sponsor summer camp opportunities for Hernando County School District students with disabilities served in our school system under an Individual Education Plan. School participation Awards will also directly fund student incentives in school based Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

The Disability Awareness Walk and Roll 5K & Family Fun Run will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 8:00 AM – Noon at West Hernando Middle School located at 14325 Ken Austin Parkway, Brooksville, FL 34613. The course for the event runs through school campuses that are home to students with disabilities.

This project is intended to provide an accessible course for students and adults to compete or share an experience with other youth, families and members from the community. Students are able to register for either the 5K or the one mile fun run. Students can use wheelchairs or strollers to help make them be successful.

During this event we will have exhibitors that provide free or low cost services from mental health to employment services, as well as school clubs and activities that support inclusivity and student success. Many student clubs and organizations from across the district will showcase how students are all welcome to join. Student clubs that are specific to the needs students with disabilities will also be on display to help inform parents about what is available on all high school and middle school campuses.

In years prior to COVID-19, the Disability Awareness Walk and Roll 5K and Family Fun Run proceeds have made it possible to send about 60-75 students to summer camp programs such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, film camp, football camps and horse riding camps.

What will these funds be used to purchase? (Please provide specifics along with dollar amounts):

Community and business partners can support this event through sponsorship/exhibitor fees & donations of chances to win items, experiences, and services for this family-fun event. Donations items are needed which may include tickets, annual passes, memberships, gift cards and gift certificates. There are also participant fees for the event.

Putting on an event such as this involves a variety of costs such as advertisement, purchase of medals, trophies, and t-shirts, securing a timing agency for the event, purchasing bibs for the runners, janitorial services for after the event.
